History tells usthat the origin of Santa Claus begins in the 4th century with Saint Nicholas,Bishop of Myra (an area in present day Turkey). One of the legends tellsabout that he acquired a fortune when his parents died while he was still in histeens. By nature St.Nicholas was a generous and honest man, particularlydevoted to children. He also cared deeply for the poor. He brought variousgifts, money and other useful items to the houses of the poor. He did this atnight, and in secrecy, so that no one knew, as he wanted no glory, he justwanted to help people. He became widely known for his generosity.
There is one famous legend about SaintNicholas. The story tells of Nicholas hearing one day of three beautifulsisters who lived in a miserable hut on the edge of Myra. The three sisters were very poor. Theycould barely earn enough to keep themselves and their old mother from starvingto death. When Nicholas heard of their plight, he was very concerned. Hedecided to do something to help them.
One night, when everyone was asleep, Nicholascrept through the streets to the edge of town. Quietly, he tiptoed up to thehut where the three sisters lived. He climbed onto the roof and dropped threebags of gold through the hole in the roof where the smoke from the fire cameout. Now it so happened that the three sisters has washed their stockingsbefore they went to bed. The stockings has been hung by the fire to dry. WhenNicholas dropped the gold through the smoke hole, each bag of gold fell into astocking.
The three sisters were overjoyed to findthree bags of gold in their stockings when they woke up the next morning. Soon, the story began to spread. Other people began to hang up stockings in the hopeof finding bags of gold when they woke up in the morning. From this legendsprang the custom of hanging stockings up by the chimney on Christmas Eve. Overthe years, Saint Nicholas became associated with Christmas.
After his death around 350 A.D. he was buried in Myra, but in 1087 Italian sailors purportedly stole his remains and removed them to Bari, Italy, greatly increasing St. Nicholas popularity throughout Europe. His kindness and reputation for generosity and love for children gave rise toclaims that he could perform miracles and devotion to him increased. St.Nicholas became the patron saint of Russia, where he was famous for hisred cape, flowing white beard, and bishops mitre. In Greece, he is the patron saint of sailors; in France he was the patron of lawyers, and in Belgium thepatron of children and travelers. The Dutch kept the legend of St. Nicholasalive. In 16th century Holland,Dutch children would place their wooden shoes by the hearth in hopes that theywould be filled with a treat and goodies.

the original santa claus, st. nicholas, was born in the ancient southeastern turkish town of lycia early in the fourth century. his generosity was legend, and he was particularly fond of children. we know this primarily through roman accounts of his patronage of youth, which eventually led to his being the patron saint of children. throughout the middle ages, and well beyond, he was referred to by many names none of them santa claus.
children today would not at all recognize the st. nick who brought gifts to european children hundreds of years ago except perhaps for his cascading white beard. he made his rounds in full red-and-white bishops robes, plete with twin peaked miter and crooked crozier. he was pulled by no fleet footed reindeer, but coaxed in indolent donkey. and he arrived not late on christmas eve, but on his christian feast day, december 6. the gifts he left beside the hearth were usually small: fruit, nuts, hard candies, wood and clay figurines.
during the protestant reformation of the sixteenth century, st. nicholas was banished from most european countries. replacing him were more secular figures, who in general were not at center stage at that point in history..the dutch kept the st. nicholas tradition alive. as the protector of sailors, st. nicholas graced the prow of the first dutch ship that arrived in america. and the first church built in new york city was named after him. the dutch brought with them to the new world two christmas items that were quickly americanized.
in sixteenth century holland, children placed wooden shoes by the hearth the night of st. nicholass arrival. the shoes were filled with straw, a meal for the saints gift laden donkey. in return, nicholas would a small treat into each clog. in america, the shoe was replaced with the stocking, hung by the chimney.
the dutch spelled st. nicholas saint nikolass, which in the new world became sinterklass. later changed to santa claus.
much of modern day santa claus lore, including the reindeer drawn sleigh, originated in america. dr. clement clarke moore posed the night before christmas in 1822, to read to his children on christmas eve. the poem might have remained privately in the moore family if a friend had not mailed a copy of it (without authorial attribution) to a newspaper and became part of the santa legend.
it was in america that santa put on weight. the rosy-cheeked, roly-poly santa is credited to the influential nineteenth-century cartoonist thomas nast. from 1863 until 1886, nast created a series of christmas drawings for harpers weekly. these drawings, executed over twenty years, exhibit a gradual evolution in santa from the pudgy, diminutive, elf-like creature of dr. moores immortal poem to the bearded, potbellied, life-size bell ringer familiar on street corners across america today. nasts cartoons also showed the world how santa spent his entire year constructing toys, checking on childrens behavior, reading their requests for special gifts. his images were incorporated into the santa lore.
santa is known throughout the world in many different names, such as:
saint nikolaas (sinter klaas), from the dutch father christmas, from the english kris kringle, from the germans befana, from the italians bobouschka, from the russians (a grand motherly figure instead of a male)

Christmas Miracles Christmas is atime for miracles. It is also atime when the dull things of daily life and the forecast of human hature gives way to aspiritual awakening.Allow me to share with you one truly wonder of Christmas.
Our miracle story comes from an incident that occurred in Flanders,Belgium,at the dawn of World War I.On December 24th,1914,German and English troops faced each other from the relative safety of their ditches across which no mans land lying between them.Suddenly, the silence was broken, not by gunfire, but by the strains of Silent Night arising from the German position. It wasnt long before the English troops responded with aYuletide hymn of their own. Then an amazing sight surprised the eyes of the English soldiers.A German soldier holding asmall tree arranged with lighted candles began to walk across the land toward the English lines. This miraculous scene occasioned the declaration of atruce followed by English and German troo ps greeting one another, exchanging small gifts and singing songs of Christmas.Word of this incredible phenomenon reached the High Command of both sides.
On Christmas Day,both armies moved from their positions to engage in the killing of war at other battlefields. However,on Christmas Eve 1914on afield in Flanders, there was Peace on Earth.
Christmas is atruly amazing phenomenon. The day and season perpetuate amiraculous, historical event as an annual presence that challenges an often rough, cruel, and egotistical creature--the human being--to become open and amenable to their Creators vision. The great miracle of Christmas continues in the performance of humane acts, moral honesty, and in the spiritual awareness of millions struggling to lead alife of grace.

the history of christmas
christmas is a christian holiday that celebrates the birth of jesus christ. no one knows the exact date of christ‘s birth, but most christians observe christmas on december 25. on this day, many go to church, where they take part in special religious services. during the christmas season, they also exchange gifts and decorate their homes with holly, mistletoe, and christmas trees. the word christmas es from cristes maesse, an early english phrase that means mass of christ. the story of christmas es chiefly from the gospels of saint luke and saint matthew in the new testament.
the history of christmas dates back over 4000 years. many of our christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the christ child was born. the 12 days of christmas, the bright fires, the yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals(parades) with floats, carolers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early mesopotamians.
many of these traditions began with the mesopotamian celebration of new years. the mesopotamians believed in many gods, and as their chief god-marduk. each year as winter arrived it was believed that marduk would do battle with the monsters of chaos. to assist marduk in his struggle the mesopotamians held a festival for the new year. this was zagmuk, the new year‘s festival that lasted for 12 days.

Christmas is the most important festival in the western world. It falls on December 25th. When my mother and I stayed in America, we were invited by one of my mothers friends to have Christmas with an American family. We bought some presents for our American friends on our way to their house.
They had prepared different kinds of gifts for their family and guests when we got to their house, such as Christmas candles, cakes, cards, little toys, biscuits and so on. A Christmas tree was placed in the comer of the brilliant hall. How beautiful it was! We were impressed by these. We had a big meal. After dinner, they told us some interesting stories about Christmas. We learned that Christmas had something to do with God. We went to bed at midnight. Though we knew the Santa Claus was not true, we were still waiting for the Santa Claus with white beard to bring us presents. And we received many beautiful presents the next morning.
This Christmas was really unforgettable. Not only did I have a good time, but also I knew something about foreign culture.

hristmas is coming
i like christmas, it is just like our spring festival.
maybe the spring festival is much more important and interesting than christmas, but i like christmas day better. because we can spend time with our friends and classmates during christmas. when it is snowy,
christmas becomes much more lovely, just like in fairytales. i can imagine i am in a fairytale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. what a beautiful place! so we can also call christmas “snowy lovely day.”
on christmas day, shops are red and green. there are so many christmas cards, christmas hats, christmas dolls and many colourful things. so shops look very beautiful. we can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “merry christmas.” by the way, i think studying can also become much more interesting.christmas is coming, it also means a new year will come. let’s study harder to welcome the new year!

Christmas Day falls on the twenty-fifth of December. It is a very happy day for many boys and girls . Before the term ends in some schools , the children act a nativity① or “birth” play, showing how Jesus② was born in a stable③.
On the twenty-fourth of December, all children are very excited. Usually they are sent to bed early so that their parents can get the presents ready. The younger children think that Father Christmas will come down the chimney or fireplace , so they hang up a sock for him to put presents in. The greedy ones even hang up a pillow-case④ or a sack⑤ to try to get more presents. Later that night, Father or Mother will put presents in the sock, and leave others at the side of the bed.
On Christmas morning, the children wake up very early. Some even turn on the light at two oclock, and most of them are awake by six oclock although it is not light in England for another hour or two at this time of the year.
Children look for their presents , and the young ones play while the dinner is prepared. At about one oclock in the afternoon, the Christmas dinner is brought in . The turkey or chicken is quickly eaten . Children search in their Christmas pudding for new coins which are hidden in it . The rest of the day is full of games and eating until the happiest of all Christmas hollidays comes to an end.

I have a friend who was given to me by my mother on childrens day. It is Santa Claus.
Santa Claus is an eraser. He has a red hat, a red nose, red clothes, red trousers and a large white beard. It is characterized by obesity, so it is much heavier than other rubbers. It is much shorter than sister ruler, only seven or eight millimeters. It is really indescribable.
Let me tell you a little secret. Do you want to hear it? Well, I tell you, but I cant tell Santa Claus! Every time, when I write wrong words, Santa Claus runs crazy to me like an emergency. The fat meat on the beer belly swings up and down. It looks ridiculous. When it flew to my homework book, it was very tired. But it kicked out the wrong words as usual and asked me to rewrite them. I only wrote them again with kindness and unwillingness. When my words are crooked, it will fall from the sky and sweep away the ugly words. Like a great Xia, its a pity that fat meat perfectly destroys Santas handsome. When my handwriting is very good, Santa can only stay with the stationery box commander. But he was not sad, but looked at me with a smile, like saying, "keep it!" but he never forgot to come out to see me.
It has been with me for several years. I want to love and protect it, because it is my forever friend. Ill try my best to write well, or I wont be able to keep its beer belly!
