I received a call today asking if I would be willing to bring food to a family in need. The mother was having a major operation and would be lying down for several weeks. Of course, I responded with an immediate "Yes!". As I planned the meal in my head, I thought of how many times over the years I had been asked to prepare food. I have done so countless times with a very open heart.
But the truly amazing thing is that I have received double over the course of my life. When my mother died, our house was filled with fresh dinners for weeks. A woman from the church of our community stopped by each evening with some food. The gift of food was her small way of trying to ease our pain.
Later in my life, when I was on bed resting during my pregnancy (懷孕) with twins, women of the church again stepped in to help. They arranged babysitting for my two-year-old daughter, and brought lovely dinners to our house. Even when I was put in the hospital, my husband would bring cooked meals to my hospital room. How we relied on these dinners to feed my tired husband and young daughter!
Food is all about comfort. It feeds our bodies, but it can also feed our souls. When you hear people talking about their favorite holidays, it usually includes their feelings connected with sharing food. I know that I will have many more opportunities in my lifetime to prepare food for others. It is truly a gift I look forward to preparing and delivering to someone in need.

We live in a world of things. I realized this when I left my job after 17 years. I carried the contents of my office home in three garbage bags. Every time I tried to sort through those bags to get rid of any of it, I was afraid I would need this or that later. And that was just three bags of paper!
How would I ever sort through all the other things cluttering(亂堆放) my home and my life? It’s a question that has long been asked by most Americans. Thanks to an abundance of cheap goods, instant credit, and constant exposure to the powers of advertising, acquiring has in itself become a national pastime(消遣).“We’ve begun to buy and hold on to so many items that we’re now having to acquire more and more space to accommodate our clutter,” says Dr. David Kantra, a psychologist in Fairhope, Alabama. And accumulating goods is viewed as the road to happiness.
That idea became more obvious in the 20th century, as the power of advertising linked products to a lifestyle.“The message became ‘you are what you own,’ ” says Dr. Lorrin Koran, professor at Stanford University Center. Retailers(零售商) responded to that desire for ownership. Remember the general store? It used to stock about 1,000 items: that was all we needed. And there’s always the Internet. Last year, online shoppers spent﹩204 billion on goods: eBay alone reported sales of﹩59.7 billion on goods.
In the past 30 years, the size of the average American home has grown 53%, from 1,500 square feet to a little more than 2,300 square feet, which is an extra 800 square feet for things. But instead of becoming more organized with this space, homeowners have filled it up.
“We’re at a point where people don’t know how to make decisions about quantities of things and whether items serve a purpose,”says Laura Leist, the voice of a service industry that helps people clear the clutter from their homes.
31. Why doesn’t the author get rid of some contents of three garbage bags?
A. Because he isn’t sure whether they would be used later.
B. Because they record a lot of memory.
C. Because he has enough space to place them.
D. Because they cost him a lot of money.
32. From the passage, we can learn that ___________.
A. Americans spend a lot of money on amusements
B. advertising has greatly influenced Americans’ lifestyle
C. Americans are not good at sorting through things
D. Americans enjoy shopping and buy many things they need
of time and color.
The results showed that the brain was 10 when the volunteers paid attention to more subjects. It is thought that if the brain is 11 , focusing on many aspects of a task, it has to spread its resources, and pays less attention to the clock. Therefore, time passes without us really 12 it, and seems to go quickly. If the brain is not so active, it devotes all its energies to monitoring the 13
of time, 14 creating the impression that time is dragging.
Next time you feel 15 in class, perhaps you should pay more attention to what the teacher is saying!

A baby shower is a great way to welcome a new child and congratulate the new mother or the mother-to-be. Many mothers appreciate the help of purchasing the items they will need for their new babies. Commonly, baby showers are given only to new mothers. In this way, friends and families can help to give the family the things babies will need.
Baby showers are a tradition, but what happens at a baby shower is different. Sometimes, friends and family members will hold a baby shower for a new mother as a surprise. Often, a new mother will get several showers thrown for her first child from different groups, such as one from friends, one from the mother side of the family and maybe one from her friends at work. Regardless of how many, these get-togethers are a great way for people to welcome the new child.
Planning a baby shower can be a lot of fun. For baby shower ideas, try to search for websites that offer useful information to new parents. Some things to consider for your baby shower are baby shower invitations and baby shower favors. Other things to think about are baby shower decorations! Baby shower games can bring a boring party a lot of fun. Most of these baby shower games can even be free by using items from around your home. For example, you can take a roll of toilet paper with you to the party. Each guest has to guess how many individual sheets it will take to circle the mother-to-be. Besides, giving away small gifts can make these games even more fun.
Pull together some friends to plan a few baby shower games and make your own decorations for the mother-to-be! No matter how you plan a baby shower, remember your aim is to make the mother-to-be happy and feel loved.

Of the thousands of different kinds of animals that exist in the world, man has learned to make friends with an enormous number. Some are pets, and offer him companionship; some give protection, and some do hard work which man cannot do by himself. Dogs, which serve man in all three capacities, are found in various species in all countries of the world. The Husky can live in the cold polar regions, and the Saluki is at home in the hottest parts of Central Africa. The inhabitants of certain countries are dependent for their very lives on the camel. In the West Indies, the little donkey, strong and sure-footed, carrying heavy loads even in mountainous places, is a familiar sight.
Trained and tamed for many generations, domestic animals are not accustomed to wandering in search of food and shelter. They look to their masters to provide for their needs, and as long as these are supplied, they are content to do what their masters require.
All domestic animals need proper food. It must be suitable for them, sufficient in quantity, fresh and clean. Some people feed a pet dog or cat on leftover food, and then wonder why the animal seems tired and dull. The quantity of food depends on the size of the animal and the amount of exercise it takes. Overfeeding is as bad as underfeeding. Containers for food and water must be washed regularly if the animal is to maintain good health.
Even well cared for, animals may sometimes fall ill. If this happens, the wise master seeks the best advice he can get. All sorts of medicines and treatments are available for sick animals, and in some countries organizations exist to provide them free or at a cheap price. Useful, friendly, hardworking animals deserve to have some time, money and attention spent on their health.

In comparison with her or some of my classmates, I always felt that I was not beautiful or pretty. In fact, when I was studying in middle school, I thought I was ugly and just because of these negative feelings I was not very confident. I often felt self-conscious.
One day when I was walking with my grandmother after lunch, we met one of her friends. We talked for a few minutes. Just as my grandmother’s friend was about to leave, she turned to me and said, “Amy, you look so beautiful today in that green dress.”
No one had ever made a comment like that to me before. It was so encouraging. Suddenly I felt confident and happy. I couldn’t believe that someone described me as beautiful. It is true that those words turned my life around. And I admit that I treasured that green dress for a long time.

In recent years, many parents spend a large amount of money buying electronic products for their children at the beginning of the new school year, especially parents of college freshmen. Some parents even spend tens of thousands of yuan on items like laptops, cellphones, and MP3 players. One cause of the trend is the rising living standard. However, some students force their parents to buy these electronic products for them just because they don’t want to lose face. As a student, I think we should discourage this unhealthy social trend and take our family income into consideration when buying things.
第二節(jié):讀寫(xiě)任務(wù)
One possible version:
Praise can Change a Person
Considering herself not pretty, the author always felt unconfident until she was praised by her grandmother’s friend for her green dress. This praise not only made her happy and confident but also changed her attitude towards herself. (37)
My own experience can also well illustrate the importance of praise. In primary school, as the naughtiest boy in the class, I was a headache to my teachers and my parents. However, things changed greatly after I got the highest score in a math exam. My parents praised me crazily for it and told this to our neighbors. Whenever others talked to me about my excellent examination result, I felt a strong urge to study harder and be a well-behaved boy. From then on, every day witnessed my progress in both my study and my behavior. I began to put my heart into study, listening attentively in class and finishing my homework on time. Besides, I was no longer an annoying person to others and was willing to help my classmates with math problems.
Since praise is powerful in changing a person for the better, I strongly suggest that all of us try to spot others’ strong points and not be mean with our praise. One who is often praised tend to be more confident and optimistic about life while one who is blamed will be self-abased. Remember, an ounce of praise is worth a pound of scolding.
