Dear Susan,
Words are beyond me to express my thanks to you for your timely gift---Longman Contemporary English Dictionary.
There are many reasons why I should call it a timely gift. First and foremost, I?m preparing for CET-4. It can surely help me deeply understand the new words and expressions in CET-4 Vocabulary Book. Furthermore, though I?ve had a New English-Chinese Dictionary, it just has Chinese explanation. You know, it usually leads us to misunderstand the real meaning of each word in English. In addition, it is said that Longman Dictionaries emphasize more on modern and spoken English. Accordingly, it is so useful that I can improve my oral English.
In conclusion, your present can?t be too suitable for me for the time being. Next year, when your birthday is coming, I will give you a pleasant surprise, too.
Thank you once more.
Yours, Stella

Dear Helen,
I am terribly sorry that I failed to meet you at Pu Dong Airport. But I think you will forgive me if you know the reason.
Yesterday morning, I got up early for I was eager to see you. After breakfast, I telephoned a Qiangsheng Taxi to get the gate of our neighborhood at 8 am. Hardly had I left the room to meet the taxi, I heard my daddy breathe heavily and hardly. I realized that his asthma attacked him once more. But, I never heard he breathe with so much difficulty. I hurried to ask a robust man named Ken, my neighbor, for help since my mother happened to be out. He carried my father on his back and went straight to the coming taxi and we drove directly to the nearest hospital, Pu Nan Hospital.
Please don't worry. My father is much better now. Fortunately, I called a taxi in advance. Thus, we sent my father to hospital in time. For this reason, I would thank you. However, I should apologize for missing the opportunity to meet you at the airport.

(Heading)
123 Tianhe Road
Tianhe District
Guangzhou 510620
Guangdong Province
P. R. C.
March 15, 20xx
(Inside Address)
(Salutation)
Dear Professor/Prof. Bergen:Dear Dr. Johnson,
Dear Sir: 或Dear Madam: Dear Ladies。
Dear Sir or Madam:
(Body of Letter)
(Complimentary Close)
Yours truly, Yours sincerely, Respectfully yours, Cordially yours, Yours cordially等。
Sincerely yours, Lovely yours, Your lovely, Your loving son/daughter等。
(Signature)
Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a letter. Suppose you are Zhang Ying. Write a letter to Xiao Wang, a schoolmate of yours who is going to visit you during the week-long holiday. You should write at least 120 words according to the suggestion given below in Chinese:
A Letter to a SchoolmateJune 23, 2001
Dear Xiao Wang,
__________________________________
____________________________________________________________________.
Yours,
Zhang Ying
Topic: A Letter to a SchoolmateQuestion: What are the holiday arrangements and points for attention?
Outline:I. Extending my welcomeII. Holiday schedule1. 1st day – campus2. 2nd day – the art gallery & music hall3. 3rd day – mountain climbing4. next 3 days – other places of interest (Swan Cave, Golden Lake …)5. June 23, 20xx
Dear Xiao Wang,
I’m very glad to learn that you’re going to visit me during the week-long holiday. My parents will also be happy to see you again. I am sure you will enjoy every minute here.I have arranged our schedule for the holiday as follows. On the first day you arrive, I’ll show you around our campus. On the second day, we’ll visit the art gallery and the music hall. Next day, we’ll climb a hill in the northeastern part of the city. On the top of the hill, we can have a wonderful bird’s eye view of the city. During the next three days, we’ll make some short trips to some places of interest nearby, such as the Swan Cave, the Golden Lake, etc. On the last day, I’ll see you off at the railway station.
Please remember to call and tell me your train number and time of arrival so that I can meet you at the railway station. By the way, it’s very hot here and we have a lot of sunshine, so don’t forget to wear you sunglasses.
I’m looking forward to seeing you soon.
Yours,
Zhang Ying
Dear Mr. President:
I am sophomore from the Department of Law. I?m writing the letter in purpose of complaining about the food and service in the canteen or campus.
To be frank, I am rather disappointed at the food quality, price and service in thecanteen. First, the dishes are scarcely well cooked and most of them taste the same. Secondly, most of the dishes there are priced so high that some students cannot even afford them. Thirdly, the service in the canteen is far from satisfying and the inside of the canteen always seem untidy.
To solve the problem, I suggest that another canteen be built and a mechanism of competition be introduced between the old and the new. Besides, both the canteens should be subject to the students? supervision. Dining is an everyday issue for students. It may affect their academic performance. Therefore, Isincerely hope this letter can draw your attention to the matter and I hope the problems mentioned above be solved as soon as possible.

September 10th is the day that every student should bear in mind. It is the time to express our congratulations to our teachers, who have devoted most of their time and energy to us.
I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude; I am referring to that unfortunate accident the other day, when I was knocked off my bike by taxi. If it had not been for my teachers? timely assistance in giving me first aid, I fear that the consequences might have been much serious.
Everyone agrees that it was his quick-witted response in that emergency that has led to this satisfactory outcome.
I will repay my teacher?s kindness with my unselfish help to others. Although nowadays people in mounting numbers talk about the need to be unselfish, we see very few people practice what they preach. If there were more people like my teacher, this would be a much nicer place.

Dear Xiao He,
Thank you ever so much for having invited me for the tour of Yunnan, your home province. I had a fantastic time with you and your family. Your great hospitality will be unforgettable throughout my life.
When I think of those gorgeous places of scenic beauty you showed me around, I couldn?t be more delighted. And the pineapple pie Grandma prepared for me is out of this world. I had never had so delicious food! Indeed, I am still missing your snug log-cabin, small and cozy, which was turned into my dream house in fairy land those nights.
Would you come to Harbin, my home town, some time this summer vacation? Harbin, a beautiful place frequently referred to as Oriental Paris, offers a picture of another kind. I can assure you another pleasant tour. My family and I cannot wait to see you here.
Yours,
Li Ming
